This summer, the heat has been intense across the United States. I feel like I’m pretty used to the heat since I live in the deep South, but I know that there are people out there experiencing a heat wave like never before. Heat is something that needs to be taken seriously as it can act quickly and swiftly to bring on illness and even death.
There are tons of ways to beat the heat this summer, all while still having fun. Some might be pretty common sense, but it’s easy to overlook these things when you aren’t really thinking about it. Here’s 5 tips to help you beat the heat this summer:
Allow me to share a little confession with y’all: I am not the best cook. I know, I know, my poor husband. But here’s the thing… I don’t enjoy cooking that much.
I don’t like grocery shopping. I don’t like getting hot in the kitchen. I don’t like spending time on a meal and it ending up tasting horrible. I don’t like having to throw out food because it goes bad. However, I do love sitting down to a delicious meal that I made and I love seeing my husband eat my cooking.
I have started working on meal planning (thanks for making it easy, Pinterest!) and it really helps to ease the “pains” of cooking. I wanted to share a few tips that I’ve learned that will help you save money in the kitchen and avoid having things go to waste. Most seasoned cooks are probably familiar with most of these, but as a novice cook, I have had to learn slowly but surely.
There’s just something about summer and traveling that go together. Whether it’s because more people are off during the summer or because the weather is more ideal, people tend to vacation much more frequently during the summer months. You can bet that the airline companies know this as well and often bump their ticket prices up accordingly.
Often we take vacations where driving is possible and usually cheaper, but sometimes you have to fly because of distance, time or the inability to drive where you’re going. Here’s 4 little tips that can help ensure you get the cheapest airline ticket wherever you’re traveling this summer.
We all know how important date nights are to a couple’s relationship. Whether you are dating or married, every couple needs to spend time nourishing and growing their relationship in order to stay connected and on the same page.
It’s especially important when you have kids. We are pretty good about doing a weekly date night, but we are typically pretty boring and just go out to dinner. Every now and then we get crazy and go see a movie.
My husband and I decided to make a list of date night activities to do for the next few weeks that are a little bit different, but that are still affordable. Here’s a list of six that we came up with.
Major confession: I do not love to cook. I mostly hate the grocery shopping part, but I kinda dislike the slaving over a hot oven part, too. That being said, my poor husband and I end up eating out at restaurants a lot. We have several tried-and-true favorites that we hit up pretty frequently (like Mexican!), but we love trying new places, too.
One thing we don’t love is the price tag at a nice restaurant. Things can get pretty expensive, especially if you order an appetizer or dessert, which we almost always do. We are big on appetizers. I’m usually starving from the moment that I sit down, so I “need” something to eat pretty quickly. We’ve learned a few ways to save a little cash when we eat out, so I wanted to share these with y’all:
If there’s one thing that we can all agree on, I think it would be that saving money is nice. No one likes paying bills and watching their hard-earned money fly out the window, but unfortunately bills are a part of life. We can, however, make sure that we take every opportunity to save money. This summer, my husband and I are really working on “living below our means” so that we can save up extra money as we prepare to sell our house and move. It’s all about a little give and take and smart thinking.
Let’s look at a few ways to keep a little extra money in our wallets. These tips don’t require you to do/buy/learn anything. Just smart ideas that you can start a.s.a.p.
I first heard about e.l.f. cosmetics from a fellow blogger. She mentioned seeing the brand (and the amazing prices) at Target, trying out a few products and falling head over heels in love with them all. There are some things that I don’t mind dropping a little cash on, but honestly, makeup isn’t really one. I am open to trying any and all drugstore brands and I almost always find a product that I love. I knew right away that I had to give e.l.f. products a try… and I’m so glad that I did.
All of their products are super affordable and I have been impressed with the quality of everything that I have tried. Everything. My only problem would be that Target is always out of their products, so I end up having to order online. Their website has tons of products, including all kinds of makeup, nail polish and makeup tools/brushes. I got all of the items pictured above for under $25. That’s pretty amazing in my book! Their items are completely affordable…I’m talking $1 lipstick and $2 nail polish.
Lately I have become obsessed with one style of clothing: dresses! I just cannot get enough of them and the fun patterns and colors that are available this summer. Bright bold colors are “in” right now, as are fun flirty shapes and styles. I like wearing dresses because I feel really feminine and super comfortable. They are so easy to grab and wear on hot summer days. Here’s a picture of my most recent dress find: an adorable bright printed maxi dress from TJ Maxx. I’m in love. : )
One store with a great selection of dresses that often gets left out is The Limited. I have only started shopping there more recently because I used to think that they only sold “fancy” professional looking clothing. I’m a nurse…I wear scrubs all day, so I have never needed office type clothes. I was so wrong, though. They have lots of casual pieces and tons of fun looks, especially in their dress choices. Keep reading and see what you think.
Something about pregnancy makes you immediately freak out about every single little thing that you are eating, drinking, wearing, using, etc. Once you get that positive pregnancy test, it’s all about the baby and being as safe as possible. I have several friends who are pregnant right now and they have been scouring the internet for safe products to use during their pregnancies. Since I’m a nurse, they all ask me for advice… and I have to remind them that I’m an emergency room nurse, not a baby nurse! I’ve been researching with them and I found a skin care line that I adore and WILL use when I’m pregnant in the future – Belli Skin Care.

They actually have a specific line of products for pregnant women that are free of any chemicals that have been linked to birth defects or miscarriage. They are the only line of products in the world that screens each and every ingredient for any known harmful effects to a developing baby. On their website they state that “our love of pregnancy and motherhood guides everything we do.” I really love and applaud a company that is conscientious about working to make safe products available to pregnant women, mothers and babies. I’m not really one to go all “organic” with things, but I do love the Belli Skin Care mission and their passion for safe pregnancies. I read through tons of reviews on their website and it seems like everyone really loves their products.
Mother’s Day is coming up soon and I don’t know about y’all, but I am always looking for unique gifts for my mom. My mom definitely appreciates the “typical” gifts, like pedicures and massage gift certificates, but I always like to surprise her with something different. Not only is it fun to shop for something for her, but that look of surprise/happiness on her face makes it completely worth it.
My mom and I! : )
