Blog Spotlight: Rather-Be-Shopping.com

There are just soooo many great blogs out there. We know it can be hard to keep up with the ones you love, let alone find new ones. So to help you out, we’ve created a new weekly column here at JoeShopping.com called “The Blog Spotlight”!

Each week, we’ll cover a unique money-saving blog that’s doing something a little bit different than just your average penny-pinching blog. So if you have or know of a blog you’d like to submit for spotlight consideration, please shoot an email to blogspotlight@joeshopping.com with all the info!

Meet Kyle James from Rather-Be-Shopping.com

Kyle has been at the coupons-and-deals game for 10-plus years now, and he’s learned a lot in that time. He’s learned how to find amazing coupons and deals and he’s learned that it’s a personal touch that really makes his site special. (That’s why he personally writes and signs each post!) Read below about Kyle’s site and find out how his personal touches can help you save money.

How did you first get started blogging?
My blog started as a way to personalize and complement my main coupon website. Doing coupons day after day does not allow for much of a creative outlet, so I instituted a blog to let my creative juices flow. (Downside? Makes my keyboard really sticky.)

What three words best describe your blog?
Fun, creative and educational. Kind of sounds like a pamphlet for one of my kids’ summer camps, but those are the first three words that came to mind.

Okay, how about describing your blog in five sentences or less?
My tagline is “coupons, frugal living tips and personal finance tips to make life a little easier”. I write in a casual style and throw in a lot of humor. Although sometimes I’m the only one laughing, but that’s okay. Some of my popular blog features include Coupon of the Day, Blog of the Day, and, of course, giveaways. Every couple of weeks I host a giveaway where I give one of my users a $75 Walmart gift card.

There are a ton of coupon and deal sites out there. What makes yours stand out from all the others?
As far as I know, Rather-Be-Shopping.com is the only website that is 100% me. An actual real person, not a site that scrapes deals and articles from other sites and spams the search engines with garbage and expired deals. I bring my life experience, my humor and my ability to find a sweet deal to the table to help you save money on all your online purchases.

What’s your favorite part about blogging?

Interacting with people is by far my favorite part.

What’s your best advice for saving money?
I always use the $10 rule. If I am buying something online and it costs more than $10, then I ALWAYS price compare the item and look for a coupon code. This has saved me literally thousands of dollars over the past 10 years.

What’s THE best deal you ever scored online?

Last Christmas I–er, Santa scored a HUGE deal on a Chuck E. Cheese-quality air hockey table from Sports Authority. Santa was able to combine a site-wide sale with an online coupon and get a $600 table for less than $200. I wish his elves would have put it together though.

What do you think about extreme couponing?
If you need 50 boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios and 75 bottles of hot sauce, then it’s great. Personally, it’s not for me, especially when you weigh the time required to gather and organize the coupons. But I love the idea of getting all of this free food and giving it away to food banks. I saw one episode of TLC’s show where a guy actually did this. It was really cool!

What’s the most ridiculously frugal thing you’ve ever done in your life? Something that’d make even you call yourself “cheap”.
Once I followed my dad’s lead and put a brick in the back of our toilet to save water. The brick ended up falling apart; it was ugly, really ugly. If you ever do this, use a plastic water bottle or something similar.

Unbroken by Laura HillenbrandWhat’s the last good book you read?
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Awesome. Great story of perseverance about a World War II POW. Really puts into perspective the sacrifice that our “Greatest Generation” made for us.

What are your favorite places to shop?
Online, I love Amazon.com and their prices. My wife and I have their Prime membership and the free 2-day shipping on everything is fantastic and has paid for itself several times over.
