Time to Plan for Halloween!

Hello, and welcome to fall. Don’t pay attention to the bright red thermometer, because football season has started, MDA had their Labor Day shindig, and Starbucks has officially released their seasonal favorite, the Pumpkin Spice Latte. (Extra shot, light whip.) Fall is official, and that can only mean one thing: Halloween.

It’s like scary.

Halloween has two main components, the candy component and the costume component. It only has one song, Monster Mash, although a case could be made for Thriller.

It’s during this time of year that I like to dust off my tinfoil hat and wax conspiracy theories about candy overlords and how they rule the time between Halloween and Easter. Sure, oil companies make the news, but it’s the candy guys that are pulling the strings. Sweet, chocolate-covered strings…

Halloween is big treat business. Buy your candy accordingly. These are our favorites:

Kit KatKit Kat has been giving trick-or-treaters a break since that ad campaign began in 1837, give or take many, many years.

SweetartsSweetarts may very well be my favorite candy, ever. Sadly, it has grown increasingly harder to find the original candy. Luckily the chewy kind are good, too.

For the record, the tinfoil hat is part of my costume.

Speaking of costumes, candy is dandy but nothing says Halloween like dressing up as your favorite character, or, ladies (if TV has taught me anything) a more promiscuous version of said favorite character.

Remember her from Ghostbusters? Me neither.

It’s all in good fun.

Of course, it’s the children that are the real heroes of Halloween. And monsters, Disney characters, recently-acquired Disney characters and Disney princesses. Disney does pretty well at Halloween (almost candy-esque!). Bottom line, the kids can be whatever they want, it’s Halloween.

Welcome to fall, people. And pets.

Woof. Boo.

  1. Oh wow, Pumpkin Spice Latte?? That sounds sooo good! !

Halloween is really right around the corner, isn’t it? I’d better start negotiations with my little one. I usually get dibs on about 5-10% of her stash but I may have to raise it up to 15% this year since she made me carry her back to the car after a wardrobe malfunction during trick-or-treating last year. (Did I mention she’s weighs 65 lbs and is as nearly as I am?) Yeah. 15%. Minimum. :p

Have your boys picked their costumes out yet? Mine wants to be a black cat this time around.

Anyway, great blog, Whit. The only thing that would’ve made it better was if you were handing out actual candy. :p

  2. My youngest actually has two costumes — Captain America (which he loves) and one of the green men from Toy Story, which he loved last year when we bought it on sale after the holiday.

The oldest wants to be Davey Jones, or, if that isn’t available, Capt. Jack Sparrow.

No word on the candy percentages.

  3. My son only cares about what minimal costume will get him candy. My daughter has 7 or 8 costumes and will go through periodic wardrobe changes throughout the day.
