MeltDownFreeDis wrote the blog post 7 ways to minimize holiday stress (November 28 at 11:37am)

Shop early, instead of often. Keep a countdown calendar of actions (be kind to sibling, read a prayer, quote or poem) instead of candy Download favorite shows & songs, so they are handy when you need them instead of rushing to get back home by 7:30/8:00 to watch specials with fam.  Create a weekly food plan so you know what you are eating and can shop for groceries when it is less crowded Schedule spa/exercise time once a week at least and keep it like a dental appointment Focus on...

MeltDownFreeDis wrote the blog post 5 E-Gift Cards For The Last Minute Shopper (December 21 at 7:11pm)

I realized that a few of my teacher gift ideas have not been executed as expected. I also have received a gift or two from folks with whom I don't normally exchange gifts. After an hour at the post office, I am not officially all about the e-card. Here are a few ideas: Kohl's. http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/egiftcard.jsp   L.L. Bean (email the card, or have them deliver it with free shipping) http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/507?qs=3005036_pmd_google  Barnes and...

MeltDownFreeDis wrote the blog post Sister In Law gifts (December 16 at 4:56pm)

My sister in law is very cool. She shops well and always matches. I had kids first and she found really thoughtful little gifts for me, like a fabulous sweater/wrap/poncho thing for nursing/mommy tummy, and the best baby shoes (Robeez). When we have secret Santa, I try to make it so she gets me. This year, I am shopping for her, and I am at a loss. My brother says to get her a gift card because she returns all the time anyway, but now that she is juggling work and a 3=-year old, I have a...

A joke a day calendar, because you need a sense of humor to be around my kids Dog treats, because my kids love the photo of your dog in  your office, which means they pay attention A bulb that will grow into a flower, because you watch my kids blossom Tea, because you deserve that and sympathy Movie theater gift card, because you deserve an escape Toys R Us gift card, because you should attend to your kid the way you attend to mine Dunkin's basket, because 8:00 is pretty early...

Jill Very sweet and very clever! I may borrow one of these for my daughter's teacher. (December 9 at 12:16pm)
MeltDownFreeDis
MeltDownFreeDis The nicest teacher gift I ever received was a note from a family whose son was literally missing part of his brain. They gave all of the people on his team a pot, a bulb, & a bag of rocks. The note had directions on how to nurture the bulb, & as it grew, I thought of how amazing their son was for overcoming so much. By the time he was 6, he was reading on grade level. Every person who knew him took responsibility for his success. The gift was the perfect metaphor. Dollar value, maybe $8. (December 10 at 12:10am)

MeltDownFreeDis wrote the blog post Toys For Tots in 'Da House (December 7 at 9:40pm)

Not sure if you are a hockey fan, but when I was at Toys R Us today, I saw a tall guy with a camera crew. Then another, and another.  They were a team, complete with girlfriends and publicists, but they were so humble, open, and happy to see each teammate as he walked in the door. I lurked. I tweeted. I did not take a cell phone pic. Then one put on a Jersey.  The Washington Capitals. Turns out they were shopping for Toys For Tots. How awesome.  Nothing puts you in the...

MeltDownFreeDis wrote the blog post Hiding cookies (December 6 at 12:24am)

Here is what it came to. I had to hide cookies from my husband. That is not a euphemism.  I made cookies with/near my kids. They did not eat dinner. I scolded, took the cookies away and left them in their shame to eat meal a-ham, or alternative meal b-leftover meat loaf. They chose c- throw fruit at each other and then come up and tattle.  They tattled and the older, less deceptive one, had chocolate on his mouth.   "You ate the cookies!!!" Ummmm. Um. Um. "If you didn't...

Andrew
Andrew Now I feel bad for you. I should send you some cookies. :) Actually, your hubby should step up and bring you home a big box o' your favorites! (December 6 at 6:16pm)
MeltDownFreeDis wrote the blog post Is that what Christmas is all about? (December 5 at 11:46pm)

Like a lot of parents, I am struggling to balance the materialism of Christmas with the reason for the season.  A comedian once said that the reason adult asks kids what they want to be when they grow up is because they are looking for ideas. I think we ask kids what they want for shopping reasons, but it becomes a "where you going to college" question pretty quick, and when you are 6, the stakes seem as high. Then we wonder why kids are greedy. We asked what they wanted, they told us,...
